Altai®

Self-Cooling Parcel Shipper

The clinical-grade parcel shipper that produces its own cold — no freezers, no cold rooms, no dry ice, no PCM conditioning.

What is the Altai self-cooling parcel shipper?

The Altai is the world's first actively self-cooling parcel shipper for biopharma. It produces its own cold on demand — activated by sliding a switch — with no freezers, cold rooms, electricity, dry ice, or PCM conditioning required. It ships in summer, in winter, on any continent, and is available in 2–8 °C and 15–25 °C (controlled room temperature) ranges.

How does the Altai's cooling technology work?

Altai uses evaporative (adsorption) cooling built on a zeolite-based ZeoFlex™ cooling unit. A Thermal Control Unit (TCU) — the electronic activation module — controls cooling in response to real-time internal temperature.

  • Cooling is roughly 10× more efficient than PCM (phase-change material) systems.
  • Insulation is vacuum insulation panels (VIP) — about 8× more effective than Styrofoam.
  • Four-sided cooling gives strict temperature control across summer and winter ambient conditions.

How long does the Altai keep its payload in range?

Each ZeoFlex™ cooling unit provides 96 hours of cold life, validated against ISTA 7D Summer and Winter profiles across an ambient range of −10 to +43 °C. Cold life can be extended by swapping in a fresh cooling unit mid-journey, or by precooling the shipper before use (see the hibernation question below). For route-specific duration requirements, contact our team.

Does the Altai use lithium batteries?

No. The Altai contains no lithium batteries — the Thermal Control Unit runs on standard AA batteries, and the zeolite cooling medium is non-toxic. For route-specific airline, IATA, or dangerous-goods documentation requirements, contact our team and we'll work through your compliance requirements with you.

Is the zeolite cooling material toxic?

No — the zeolite used in the ZeoFlex™ cooling unit is non-toxic. A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is available on request.

Does orientation matter? Can the Altai be shipped upside down?

Orientation does not affect cooling effectiveness. The cooling process is driven by pressure differences within the ZeoFlex™ unit, so the Altai performs the same whether upright, on its side, or upside down.

Can the Altai be turned on and off?

Yes. The Thermal Control Unit has a discretionary on/off switch, which pauses the 96-hour cold-life clock. Note that pausing only preserves remaining hours if the interior stays cold — if the unit is allowed to warm up while switched off, re-cooling consumes energy from the remaining budget.

Can I extend cold life by precooling (hibernation)?

Yes — the Altai is hibernation-capable. Placing it in a cold room cools the interior and reduces the internal cooling energy needed, extending cold life by roughly the time spent in the cold room. Precooling also shortens the initial cooldown time. (This is optional — the Altai needs no conditioning to work.)

What does the release button do?

The release button relieves the internal pressure used to control temperature while the Thermal Control Unit is on.

Is the Altai reusable? How does it support sustainability goals?
  • Reusable cold box: swap the ZeoFlex™ cooling unit for the next use; spent units return for certification and reuse. Over 90% of Altai materials are reusable.
  • The re-use program reduces waste by up to 95%.
  • Up to 90% less energy than conventional PCM shippers — the Altai is shelf-stable at room temperature, so no energy is spent keeping it ready.

How is the Altai different from single-use evaporative shippers?

Other evaporative shippers on the market typically cool from a single side, are single-use, and cannot be switched off once activated. The Altai provides:

  • Four-sided cooling for strict 2–8 °C control across ambient conditions — including non-upright orientations.
  • Multi-use design with a returnable, re-certifiable cooling unit.

What is the Gobi Eclipse FreezeFree Vaccine & Sample Carrier?

The Gobi Eclipse is a WHO PQS–prequalified, long-range carrier designed to safely transport vaccines, biological samples, and other temperature-sensitive medical products within the required +2 °C to +8 °C range, even in extreme ambient conditions.

What does “freeze-free” mean?

“Freeze-free” refers to the ability of the carrier to prevent contents from being exposed to sub-zero temperatures, even when using frozen coolant packs. This protects both:

  • Vaccines, which can lose potency when frozen
  • Biological samples, which can degrade or become unusable
How does the Eclipse prevent vaccines and samples from freezing?

The Eclipse uses a controlled thermal barrier system that separates the payload compartment from the coolant pack, ensuring temperatures remain above 0 °C while maintaining the required cold range. Under the hood, Eclipse combines Gobi's proprietary vacuum-insulated stainless steel with a design optimized for rapid cooldown, in an ergonomic, lightweight package.

Yes. Summit VIPs are reusable with an estimated useful life of years to decades depending on the application, and they are recyclable using appropriate protocols.
